Looking for information on Candidus Yager/Jager
« on: Sunday 29 December 13 14:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I have been able to trace my American ancestor til my great, great grandfather, Candidus Yager (sometimes spelled Kandidus or Jager in the census). He was born approximately 1826 in Germany. He moved to America in the 1850's, where he resided in Ohio. He had 2 children: Theresa (1854) and John (1856) with his wife, Brigitta [Haselmaier] Yager. He married his wife (in the US) in July 1864.

I have been able to find the following records on him: marriage receipt, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses.

I have been used FamilySearch to look for his wife's record. I have been able to trace his wife's roots back to Germany, but I have been unable to find a record of his birth in Germany.

My questions include:
  • How should I find his birth record? Are there other free resources?
  • Is it possible that they were married in Germany prior to moving to the US? I find it weird that they married in the US after they had children.

Thanks for all of your help!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat :)

I see that he is helpfully specific as to birthplace in the 1880 census, saying that he and both his parents were born in Sigmaringen, consistent with his birthplace of Prussia as given in the 1860 census.  This information may help those with knowledge of German records to help you further.

Do his US marriage or (if any) death records give any details of his parents?

I see the US marriage record, and it doesn't list parents.  I didn't see a death record for him, but I think Ohio death records prior to 1908 typically didn't list parents.

There is a reference for an obituary for Brigitta - http://www.mcdl.info/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=150&Itemid=98  It's possible it may have some helpful information about when they came to the US, how long they claimed to be married, etc.
