Freemason's photo.
« on: Monday 30 December 13 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I have this photo and it is obvious he is a freemason. I know nothing at all about freemasonery but would like to know more the photo and the man (my husband great grandfather) and his position in the freemasons. I know the photo was taken in India.

I don't know too much about the Freemasons, but the apron looks like that of a Worshipful Master.  The collar could be an Officers collar.

Have a look at the following link for the different aprons.

The photo was most likely taken to commemorate his installation as Master of his lodge - he is wearing an Installed Master's collar and gauntlets and is standing next to the Master's pedestal.

At the end of his year as Master the collar & gauntlets will be handed on to his successor and he will then have a Past Master's collar & no gauntlets.

Michael.

The photo was taken in 1921 in India. Probably in Poona but they moved around a lot. Could anybody recommend a way of finding out what lodge he may have been attached.

Can anybody tell me anything about the medals. He was, at the time serving in the army. He later became a lieutenant in the Indian Army. Are they military metals or do they have medal in the freemans? Sorry for my ignorance.

The medals on the collar are to do with freemasonry & are not military. The large one at the top is the lodge's and shows that the wearer is that year's Installed Master; the bar at the top of its ribbon should have the lodge name on it & the bar at the bottom is for the lodge number - I hope there is enough detail in the photo to read them.

The medal to the left of the large one could be for the Royal Arch and the bottom one with the dark ribbon (which would be dark blue) could be the Hall Stone medal. I don't know what the others are.

Michael.
