Ann Waltham illegitimate child c1860s possibly Spalding?
« on: Monday 06 January 14 08:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

One of hubbys ancestors John Alexander Lince 1828 (originally born John Rudd of Denton Norfolk) was a serial bigamist using both surnames, Lince being his mother's maiden name.  Having come across 5 marriages over 4 decades it didn't really surprise me to find the following

Friday 3 February 1865 Stamford Mercury
John Lince gardener of Spalding appeared before Long Sutton Petty Sessions January 27 1865 charged with not providing for a child and ordered to pay 1s/6d per week and support costs for Ann Waltham's illegitimate child.  I know that fathers names were omitted from bmd's in illegitimacy so it could prove very difficult to find this child.  My hubby's Gt Gt Grandfather John Alexander Lince 1858 is missing from the bmd and does vary in birthplace from 1871 being born in Spalding to 1881-1901 being born in Denton so I don't know if he is the child in question.  It would look encouraging by the 1871 census that he was Ann's child

1871 Cottingham Yorks Nest Green John Lince 44 Norwich Gardener Ann 46 wife Malton Yorks John 14 son Spalding Lincs, except that this Ann is Ann Elizabeth Harrison c1825 who John married at Barrow Upon Humber on 21 Nov 1867 daughter of William Blake unless she turns out to be a serial bigamist too and has several surnames including Waltham :(

My earlier posts from this week show just how confusing the Lince, Rudd family is and how it spreads across Lincolnshire and Norfolk
