What details should I first obtain before endeavoring to search for somebody in the immigration records?

Do you mean records of someone leaving the UK or coming to the UK? What time frame are you looking at? What country to or from?
I don't think you will get a complete record online, though if you post names, dates etc on the appropriate board, someone may be able to help you.

Sorry for being so vague. I am looking for somebody coming to the UK in the 1960's from China. Thank you for the response, I'll see what I can dig up!

Hi Dawn,

I have contacted The National Archives who have searched the certificates of British Citizenship requests 1949 - 1986, on my behalf and unfortunately they could not find an entry. I'm going to continue browsing through their website as their FAQ pages are very good.
