finding the parents of Joseph Simmons b.1832
« on: Saturday 11 January 14 22:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody

I have a problem that I need to clear up.

After tracing my family back to my gt grandfather, I found that his parents are called Joseph Simmons and Caroline Handcock.   My gt grandfather's name was Albert James Simmons.  On the 1881 census he is living with Joseph and Caroline.  I found Joseph and Caroline on the 1871 too, but haven't found any earlier one's for them.

This is where I have a problem.  I found a birth of a Joseph Simmons in Aston Abbotts, Bucks that ties up with the info on the censuses.  The parents were listed as James and Sarah. (On LDS).  But which James and Sarah?  I found a likely record on the LDS for a James Simmons to Sarah Cock marrying 1821 in Aston Abbott which seems likely.  Unfortunately, another tree being researched by my second cousin has James marrying a Sarah Tester.

Is there any way to find out which one is right?  She has gone back much further than me, but, I don't want to use the information if it is incorrect.  Also, if it is possible to establish which (if either!) is right, I can let her know.

Thanks

I don't have the reference for the 1871 census.  The 1881 is RG11 225 25 3 registration district: Islington.  Address: 24 King Edd St, Islington.  Caroline has been mistranscribed as Catherine.  All details match the 1871 except that Albert James is not there in 1881.  He is, however, back with his father who is widowed on the 1891.

Hi

I think I may have found YOUR James and Sarah in the census's in Aston Abbotts, over 3 census's (41, 51, 61) with numerous children including Joseph born abt. 1833.

The marriage of James Simmons and Sarah TESTER 15 Jun 1822 took place in Iford Sussex, which is 60ish miles away, this family are still in Sussex in the census's ( a couple of their childrens baptism's can be found on familysearch) they DO have a son JOSEPH but he was born 1839 in Southover Sussex.

So I think your assumptions of the James Simmons/ Sarah Cock marriage is correct

Hi

For comparison

1841 census Aston Abbotts   Bucks.

James Simmons 40 ag. lab
Sarah               45
Charles             10
Joseph               8
Mary                  5

All born in County.
Class HO107, Piece 49,  Book 1

***********************************

1841 Southover Sussex

James Simmons  35 cowkeeper
Sarah                40
Edward and James 15
Louisa 13
Eli 9
Sarah 6
JOSEPH 2

All born in county
Class HO107, Piece 1120, Book 2.

I'm quite sure this James and Sarah are the couple that married in Iford, their son Eli was baptised in Iford, and states Iford as his place of birth in a later census record.

I think the Aston Abbott one must be the right family.  Thanks for looking.
