That's great - thanks Claire.  My friends great/great grandparents married in 1882 and she has a wedding photo plus earlier and later photos taken by James Brown and was curious about him

For future reference, there is an excellent website - www.historicaldirectories.org they have a good range of directories for most of the counties in England.  You do have to browse them, as they are not indexed, but are a wonderful source of information.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Hi

Thanks for the link BumbleB - I'll bookmark it

I had checked the address in 1911 but a different family were living there at that time

Hiya mate, I know this post is way old, but here goes...

James Brown was my 3rd great grandfather. I am researching him also. His studio in Leeds was at:  11, New Station Street, Boar Lane, Leeds.

He was born 1834 in Heaton Norris, Stockport, Cheshire.
He died 1889 in Rusholme, Manchester, Lancashire  |  24, Parkfield Street.

Note: it is possible that it was his son, Joseph Brown took the wedding photo in question, as there were numerous photography studios under the banner of ‘James Brown’ photography. It was a family business.

Cheers
Paul
