Hi,
I am trying to track down some members of my Jefferson family & wondered if anyone can help.
Hannah L Evans was born in Wales on 16/08/1850 & married Thomas Jefferson in 1872. Hannah & Thomas are my 2 x grt grandparents.
The couple moved from Northumberland to Islington,London between 1878-1881. Their last five children were all born in Islington. Their names are Martha Jefferson (b1881),Margaret (b1883),Ethel (b1886),David William (b1888) & Edward Hemmings (b1891). Thomas died in Wandsworth,London Q1 1902 & I have traced Hannah in the 1911 census, living in Chelsea.
I then spent many years trying to trace the date of Hannah's death without success & then, almost by chance, came across her in the Canadian 1921 census. Hannah is recorded as the mother-in-law of John Frederick Hurley, living in Winnipeg City. John's wife is recorded as Josephine Hurley, aged 30 & there is a son Harry Jefferson Hurley, aged 3,born in England. There is also a sister-in-law;Ethel Jefferson, aged 28. All emigrated to Canada in 1919 (other than John Hurley=1902). Here I get a little confused because,as far as I am aware,Hannah & Thomas had no daughter named Josephine. I have traced the marriage of Josephine & John to Q4 1917 in Camberwell,London & have ordered the M/C.
Did one of Hannah's daughters change her name to Josephine??. If so which daughter or is she a previously unrecorded daughter?
I have been unable to track down daughter Margaret (Josephine?) in 1901 (possibly traced in 1911 but uncertain),Martha from 1911 onwards & son,David William from 1911 onwards. I have also been unable to trace son Edward Hemmings Jefferson in 1911,although I have traced him after this date. Did they all emigrate to Canada? Hannah & daughter,Ethel, both died in Vancouver,Canada,Hannah in 1937 & Ethel in 1935 but I have been unable to trace any of the others.
Any help/advice gratefully received.
Regards
