Leighton's working in Crete
« on: Thursday 16 January 14 10:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am struggling to find certain records regarding my family. The Leighton's are Scottish, but I believe that maybe some of the births occurred in Crete and I am not too sure how to track them down.

David West Leighton b. approx. 1854/5 worked  as a Superintendent for the Eastern Telegraph Coy mainly in Canea, Crete. I cannot find his birth entry on Scots People. I was told he also worked in Jute (questionable) and that he travelled to India (possible with the ETC). He died in Edinburgh 21 Dec 1906 but is buried in Dundee.

One of his daughters (my great-Grandmother) was born in Crete and I was always led to believe she was born there on the way to emigrating to NZ.

There are two other siblings Johanna and James who lived in NZ and we always thought they were born in NZ, but there are conflicting stories (I am yet to check the NZ records).

Another daughter Elizabeth Leighton died in Dundee 15 Oct 1910 at age 19, but I cannot find her entry in the register. I am wondering if she was born in Crete or maybe even India.

There are two other brother David (died in WW1 in France) and William.

Can anyone tell me how I can find out the birth details for Crete? or if I am missing something?

Thanks in advance
Melanie

An update. I did find the marriage entry on Family Search and it shows it is 6 Oct 1885 British Embassy Or Legation Abroad, Great Britain. Any ideas how I then find further information?

Did you check the "minor" indexes on Scotland's People? Some records of Scots b/m/d overseas will be there (I didn't see a reference for the marriage on the site I checked).

GRO overseas birth indexes (these can be ordered from the GRO in the same way as English/Welsh birth certificates - a few different sites have the indexes):
1886-1890 indexes
all registered Zante (numbers are volume/page)
Johanna Fullerton Leighton 8/1217
Margaret Leighton, 8/1213
William Michael F Leighton, 8/1211

1890-1895
Elizabeth Ferrier Leighton,  9/885
(not sure of location as the image is blurred but Ba??o)

You are AMAZING! !!! Wow you found them. I thought I checked the minor records but maybe only the marriage one. Did you find these on Scotlands People? I even tried googling overseas or embassy records and kept going in circles. I wish I had found this forum sooner. I have made huge progress since joining.

Don't worry, I found them. I managed to get onto Family Relatives yesterday, but their link to the Overseas Records isn't working (or at least not with my Internet Explorer, Windows combination). Thank goodness I know html etc, found the link I need.

In case anyone wants the list of Overseas records they have and are having the same problem as me, here is the link http://www.familyrelatives.com/search/search_browseoverseas.php?datatype=GRO+CONSULAR+BIRTH+INDEX&event=Marriage&year=%25
From there you can select all the other record types :)

Oh and the Elizabeth Ferrier Leighton looks like it was actually Zante too, which would make sense.

Johanna Fullerton Leighton would fit well with the name of the Margaret Ferrrier's mother back in Dundee in 1858...
