Electoral rolls show Mabel Beatrice COUTTS, phot. artist,  living at 2 Chisholm St, Greenwich NSW, 1937 - 1963.
Jean Petrie COUTTS is sometimes with Mabel and at other times in Brisbane.  First record for Jean is 1913 and she is not shown after 1968.  This makes her birth before 1892.

I did not look at all of the entries (takes ages to download the image) but Mabel appears to have no-one of the same surname with her except for Jean in some entries.

In 1925 it seems that Jean is with family (relationships not shown) all with surname COUTTS at the same address:
"Astra", Kedron Brook Rd, Wilston, Qld
Donald, clerk
Enid, home duties
Isabella, home duties
James Ross, clerk
Jean Petrie, nurse
John Petrie, school teacher
Ena, typist

Published results for the Art Department at Brisbane technical College for Mabel in 1904 would suggest that her birth is earlier than 1890.

It appears that Mabel's father James Petrie COUTTS was born in 1854 Scotland, married Alice Jane WARD in 1882 England.
There is a birth 1885 (June qtr) Mabel Beatrice COUTTS; district-Stoke D.  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
There are other births on QLD BDM to James Petrie COUTTS and Alice Jane (Bell) WARD.
James Petrie COUTTS was a warrant officer and must have moved about. TROVE has mentions of the family in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Hobart.
James Petrie Coutts died 27/12/1930 (reg 1931) http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/21656419
Alice COUTTS died 1937 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/58802823?

cheers :)

All this amazing info, within a few days!
I've been trying to find a link between the Walkers and Coutts families but not been successful so far.
Cupoflife, you've done a great job finding the Scottish connection, thank you for your efforts. I'm going to see what else I can dig up now armed with this new info. It will be great to uncover the story behind intrepid Mary.
Thanks also to Cass & Judith, I'm keeping notes on all the findings. Will let you all know when/if Mary has a final instalment.  ;)

Many thanks to Ros for forwarding the will details, I really appreciate all your kind help.
We now know from the will, that Mabel Coutts was a close friend of 14 years, who visited Mary during her final days in a rest home in Cameray.
Kind regards,
Jean
