Sorry to come in at this late stage! The Oxford Dictionary of English states that 'slub' is 'a lump or thick place in yarn or thread. or 'wool that has been slightly twisted in preparation for spinning'. That would mean that a 'Slubpuddler' has something to do with the textile trade!
