Christopher Laws
« on: Sunday 19 January 14 12:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

My great grandfather Christopher Laws was born on 22 March and baptised on 13 April 1856 at Bishopwearmouth, son of George Laws and his wife Hannah.

George Laws died in 1857, and his wife Hannah in 1859. On the 1861 census Christopher is living at 129 Pitfield, West Rainton with his Uncle and Aunt, Hugh and Jane Dickinson. He is listed as relative, aged 5, School Boy, born Sunderland.

Cannot find Christopher on the 1871 census when he would be aged between 14 to 16? There was an old family story he went to South Africa for a while to work in the Diamond mines, however in 1881 he is living at Bearpark as a lodger with his future wife and her family.

Also looking for census returns for Christophers sister Ann Laws, baptised 28 December 1853 at Bishopwearmouth. Cannot find her on the 1861 0r 1871 census, however on the 1881 census she is down as a visitor, unmarried, age 27 (General Domestic Servant), born Sunderland. If anyone can help with the 1861 or 1871 census for Ann (may be down as Annie), much appreciated! :)

Hugh and Jane also seem to be missing from the 1871 census. Perhaps they all went overseas and only he returned.

Have you discounted the 16 year old Ann Laws who is a domestic servant in Bishopwearmouth in 1871? RG 10 / 5004 / 25 / 43

I saw that one as well. However it gives her birth in 1856 in Bedlington.  A good distance to travel in those days, from the Sunderland area.

The one I'm looking at is definitely born Sunderland.
She is a domestic servant to a Mary Thompson.
As I said, she is aged 16, so born 1855.

Edit: she is transcribed on Ancestry as Ann Jans  ::)

Hi!
Thanks to all who have replied. Much appreciated!

As far as I know Hugh Dickinson died in 1864 in Durham and his widow Jane (Christopher Laws Aunt) died in 1884 at Lanchester?

Will keep on looking but thanks for the help! :)
