I'm surprised that his marriage or next of kin are not shown on his service record; is that usual for Navy records?

nothing Jan, was in barnardos from birth then hms Ganges then straight to royal navy, no record of next of kin on all his navy documents

My late father's RNR WW1 Service Record has his home address and next of kin on it.

In fact all of the early RN Records that I have, (going back to the 1840's) have next of kin & address on...

And so that does seem strange.
