Looking for the parents of Andrew & Hugh Ferry Donegal Ireland 1871-1880
« on: Thursday 23 January 14 03:15 GMT (UK) »
I think Andrew Ferrie B: 1871 in Dungloe County, Donegal Ireland and Hugh Ferrie B: 1880 in Donegal, Ireland were brothers. In the census 1901 Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, Scotland Hugh is living with his brother Andrew. I have been unable to find a definitive parental link. Does anyone have information. Andrew immigrated in 1913 to Trail, British Columbia, Canada and Hugh immigrated in 1923 to the USA. Andrew Ferrie was my great grandfather.
Thanks,
Leslie

Hugh appears on the 1940 US census where it shows most of his children being born in Scotland so that's the place to look for a marriage as his wife was born there also.
There's just the one marriage in 1905, this is on Scotland's People so it might be worth buying a few credits & downloading the marriage cert. from there which saves you having to buy it, however his wife was called Grace & I can't find one with her name.
At least it's a start.
Edit:
This Hugh's wife is called Maggie
There's 1 in Dunbarton 1912 to a Catherine.

Is this 1901?

Andrew Ferrie 30 coal miner b. Ireland
Mary Ferrie 34 b. Glasgow
Maggie Ferrie 11
Robert Ferrie 8
Patrick Ferrie 4
Mary Ferrie 2
Kate Ferrie 11 months
Hugh Ferrie 22 brother coal miner b. Ireland

Address: West Barbeth, Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire

Marriage cert for Andrew and Mary in Scotland  would help in establish parents' names. Children's birth certs (all showing as Cumbernauld) would also confirm date and place of parents' marriage.

Hugh also appears in 1911 so it might be worth looking at that.

I have also noted on the marriage certificates in Canada that the fathers name is listed as Anthony Ferrie. However when checking for birth certificates on Scotlands People I cannot find the birth record - example Catherine Ferry. Father Andrew Ferry. Mother Mary Ferry. I have the original certificate. Born in 1900 April 21 at Cumbernanld.

Still looking. Thanks.

Hi Leslie

When you say that you have an original certificate, which one is this? Is this one for Catherine's birth in 1900? If so, mother Mary showed as McBride? Address? Andrew's occupation?

Normally Scottish birth certs show date and place of parents' marriage. Is this showing on that birth cert?

There is a marriage showing in 1895 in Stirlingshire for an Anthony Ferry and a Mary McBride...

An idea....wondering whether Mary McBride was married before. From the family's 1901 census, we have a number of children born before the 1895 McBride/Ferry marriage (still to be confirmed as connected).

Ambly has mentioned:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xpz/
Son Robert FERRIE, married 1918 in Vancouver.
His Marriage record says his mother is Mary McBRIDE
It also says he was born "Smithton? Road, Scotland"

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xq0/
He attested for WW1 CEF, and stated his dob was :
22 June 1893.

There is this 1891 census entry in Cumbernauld:

Mary Kelly 24 b. Denny, Stirlingshire
Jane Loppen 15..son b. Ireland  :-\ Farmworker
Maggie Kelly 2 Months b. Cumbernauld
Mary Kelly 2 Months b. Cumbernauld

Address: 55 Smithston R, Cumbernauld

Certainly one census to view as an original  ::) The reason I would look at this further is the ref, in addition to a Maggie b. Cumbernauld with mother Mary, is the address Smithston R(oad?) which Robert Ferry gave as his address for birth on his WW1 attestment papers that Ambly referenced above.

If the 1895 marriage mentioned is correct, hopefully it will throw more light on things.
