Useful tip
« on: Wednesday 14 July 04 00:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all.
Useful tip 1. If you have a family, check in every census you have available for all these names, often you will find mother-in-laws, cousins etc from this,
Useful tip 2: Servants are often family members, even if the relationship is not stated.
Useful tip 3: If you have a surname in a particular area, as long as it is not a reallly common one - get all the info on ALL of this surname, in that area, as it helps to clarify family relationships later in your search.
Useful tip 4 : Buy, steal or borrow ALL the census that are avaiable, compare these with the IGI which is useful sometimes, visit the record offices if you can , these are invaluable to prove your finds, but they usually only relate to C of E christenings, so if you have a Murphy (as I do), then be prepared to look elsewhere.
Census detail covers everyone, whereas C of E records will not cover Methodist or Catholic church records, [presuming they went to church]. The registration index is complete, but not fuly transcribed, try your local library for everything for free, if you have the time.
             Enough for one usefult tip.
Best

Excellent tips...

Can I add a useful tool based on your tip no. 3

I have been pandering to my obssession about the Lowthers of Cumberland and to help "sort 'em oot" I collected together every christening and marriage involving a Lowther in every parish in Cumberland.  Yes, it took a while.  But now I have an excellent booklet I can take to record offices and use while looking at census.

I used Hugh Wallis's batch site to only collect entries from OPRs and not member submitted ones.

Systematically go through every batch number and search on your name.  This also gives a good heat map of concentrations of the name - I found a whole passel of Lowthers hiding in the Preston Quarter.

Cheers,
Pam
