Alfred Hope please help
« on: Saturday 25 January 14 23:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi
For a long time I have been trying to research my grandfather Alfred Hope born 1893/4.  I know from his marriage certificate that he was 20 in 1914 and his father was called John. I have a vague memory of my dad telling me that Alfred came from Worcester. Alfred married in Hereford  and after the war returned to his wife Ethel in Bosbury but he suffered shell shock and sometime in the 1920s he disappeared ( possibly back to Worcester?).
My own dad was orphaned after his mum died and so spent most of his childhood in a home in Hastings. After the 2nd world war he lodged with an aunt who lived in one of the houses at the top of Lark Hill rd. Could this aunt be a relative of my grandfathers? Its so frustrating not knowing her name. The only other info I have is that he was a driver/ groom in the Royal Army Service Corps and later worked as a painter and decorator.
I havent found any records at all apart from marriage. So desperate to find out about him.

Hi Thanks for your replies.
John was a general labourer and was deceased on the 1914 marriage certificate. I couldnt find a war record for Alfred Hope that related back to Worcester. Its so frustrating as I cant research his family. I have a very old photo of him in his uniform.

Are you sure his father's name was John?

I ask because the best fit I can find is this one:
1901 census: Class: RG13; Piece: 2779; Folio: 140; Page: 39
Moor Street, Worcester

Hope, Alfred  Head  M  41  Baker  b Birmingham
Hope, Eliza  Wife  F  41  b Birmingham
Hope, William  Son  M  17  Apprentice Baker  b Birmingham
Hope, Alfred  Son  M  8  School  b Worcester
Hope, Harry  Son  M  4  b Worcester
Hope, Edith  Daughter  F  21  b Birmingham
Hope, Rose  Daughter  F  19  Domestic Servant  b Birmingham
Hope, Nellie  Daughter  F  15  Domestic Servant  b Birmingham
Hope, Carrie  Daughter  F  10  School  b Worcester

That matches the only birth for an Alfred Hope in Worcester?
March qtr 1893
Worcester district    vol 6c, page 314
Hope, Alfred

Unless your Alfred was born in Worcestershire, rather than Worcester City?

Hi
I've found a war record for an Alfred Hope
age 23 years and 62 days when he signed up 30.11.1915 from 58 Moor St Worcester solderer.
But once again it looks like this is the son of Alfred and Eliza. Next of kin mother Eliza.
So that does rule out the Alfred and Eliza as his parents.
The other Alfred born 1893 in the area comes from Ledbury
1901 Bridge St Ledbury lodgers
Ellen Hope 36 single Ledbury
Alfred 8 Ledbury
Harry 4 Ledbury.
Alfred it looks like is  illegitimate and his father could well have been a John.Birth reg June 1892 Ledbury 6a 458
If you're sure his father was John the other alternative is at Wolverhampton 1901 Swan ST
John Hope 50 gen lab Wolverhampton
Caroline 47 glovess
Bertie 18 tinplate worker
Joseph 15 gen lab
Percy 13
Rosetta 11
Alfred 7
Gertrude 4
John had died  by 1911 but the family stayed with their mother Caroline.
As to that aunt ,Ethel had 4 sisters Edith born 1894 and married a Mr Foster Ledbury 1935,dying still at Ledbury Dec 1986  ,Mary Elizabeth born Dec 1896 c1911 in service, Louisa Violet Soley born June 1898-1928 Ledbury and Elsie Baldwin Soley born 1910,who seems to disappear. You could try tracking down the electoral rolls for the address you have in order to eliminate them.

If I had to take a guess I'd say Alfred Hope was born in Ledbury and probably met his future wife there.
