Christening Julie Kate Matson in 1894 or 1895 in Dover?
« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 11:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have been looking into the Zion religious group.  My great-grandmother, Lucy Harriet Hills, married in the Zion Chapel in 1894. I'm trying to find a christening record for her daughter Julie Kate Matson who was born 12th December 1894 in Dover. Her father was William John Matson.
I don't have any other family records which refer to the Zion congregation and so I wonder if Julie was brought up as part of that group. Julie was married in 1918 at St. Mary the Virgin church in Dover so seems to have been part of the C of E by that time.
Would Zion members have been christened?

Google "Zion Chapel, Dover" - there is information on the web about the Chapel which you may find of interest.

Thanks Betty and Priscilla
It seems as though the Zion link may have been something either Julie or her husband John Searles took up before they married.
Betty - there has always been a difference cropping up in Julie/Julia 's name. Her birth certificate says Julie but interesting the christening is Julia. Although she was my grandmother I never knew for sure which was correct.
Looking at the info about the Zion group it seems to be a variation on the C of E and I'm guessing that some people may have moved from one congregation to another according to how they felt at the time.
January 1894 marriage certificate for Julie's parents gives the family address as 124, London Road, “The Old Endeavour”, Dover and Lucy's father as a Licensed Victualler. Lucy records that after her marriage the couple lived at 1, Dour Street, Dover.
1901 census aged 29 and living at 1, Dour Street, Dover.
Seems they decided that the Buckland church was nearer for a christening or simply liked it better.

Thank you both.
