Knechts from Hessen Darmstadt

Hello, Im trying to trace back my great great grandfathers roots .Im looking for the parents of Adam Martin Knecht. Adam and his brother Peter came over from Hessen in 1852, They got a ship from Rotterdam to newyork . Ships name was Maria Magdelena. Adam Knecht was born 1833. HE was 21 when he left Hessen.
Now im in the position to go to Germany anytime I want. If i go to Darmstadt where would i go to find such records?

the only Darmstadt tree for Knecht I could find - may I point out that I don`t think Adam would have been his name in Germany - I would presume Adam was an Anglicised version of his name

Adam is also Adam, just sounds a bit different in German. Possible that he was called by his second name, Martin.
