Hi Paul,

I'm not sure which particular Chick graves you are looking for or the dates.  A number of Chick burials are shown in Portsea on the FamilySearch site.  Depending on the date, the place of burial might vary.  And sadly, St Mary's Portsea churchyard was cleared of gravestones in the 20th century.  Mile End cemetery was established in the 19th century but no longer exists, having been cleared to make way for the international ferry terminal in the 1960s.  Some of the remains were re-interred in another cemetery.

Not all graves had headstones - many people were too poor to afford them.

Cemetery records are kept by Portsmouth City Record Office (rather than the church burial records which can be consulted at Portsmouth Library).  They might be able to help you if you e-mail them.

Nell

It has just occured to me but I wondered if an one might be in a position to see where any of the chick family are buried in the Portsea area and if possible a picture of any of the graves.

Find A Grave - 48 results for the CHICK surname in England.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=&GSmn=&GSln=CHICK&GSbyrel=all&GSby=&GSdyrel=all&GSdy=&GScntry=5&GSst=0&GSgrid=&df=all&GSob=n

That website is not complete as it is contingent on living descendants uploading relevant info, but you might find other connections & histories there.  I can see 3 Chick graves in Portsmouth:
- Sub-Lt Reginald Samuel John Chick, d. 1918
- EngRm Art 5C Alan Chick, d. 1939
- Stkr 1C Edward Victor Chick, d. 1941
Most probably World War I and II casualties.

If you have a record of another Chick burial you are certain of, you can add a death record on Find A Grave and/or request a headstone photo from one of their volunteer photographers.  Free registration.

Scroll down to page 12: 1820, Feb 6th, there's a James Chick in there, d. aged 15.

Any connection with this Isle of Wight family... ?

Caroline CHICK, dau of James CHICK and Maria (Mary)
b. Cowes, Isle of Wight 24/8/1828, chr. 17/2/1835 (aged 6) at West Cowes Congregational Church
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N2N9-MM9

m. William LANE, son of Thomas LANE, on 28/11/1852 at Holy Trinity Church, Ryde
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NX6W-191 [FS says Newchurch but IOWFHS says Holy Trinity] - http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd_1/marriages/m_results_1.php?&surname=Lane&exact=yes&party=Both

One son - Frederick or Fred Lane, b. 1853, chr. 5/2/1854 Holy Trinity Church, Ryde, son of William Lane and Caroline.  I think this is the same Fred who marries Sarah CORKE in 1874.

Caroline Lane (nee Chick) died in 1855 and William Lane married again in 1856 to Jane Jolliffe.
