COAST GUARD, Mariners, Fishers & Lightermen
« on: Tuesday 21 June 05 02:22 BST (UK) »
For those of us that had kin in the Coast Guard,  it is interesting chasing them through the decades from Norfolk, Essex, Kent, Hampshire, Dorset etc.

Then when you find one, isn't it interesting that nearby residents will also have members of HMCG

Take 1861 in the village of Preston, Dorset and we find
Charles BARTLETT, William BLOOMFIELD, James BURT,
Thomas MARSH, William POYNER & Richard ZELLEY.

Richard had children born in Dorset, Essex and Norfolk.
Zelley,  Lovell, Godbold, Woods, Phillips, Lewis, Emery,
Magee, Baker, White. Flisher, Kyne, Tilston, Valence/Vallens,
Mabb/Mabbe, Bellamy, Selley, Martha Smith, Arno (of Dartmouth, Devon}.
Dorset, London, Warwick, East Anglia, Kent,  Devon
North Wales

The ancestors lived here and there, in many scattered
places, with various occupations

The Mariners - from Canal boats to ocean liners
« Reply #1 on: Wednesday 22 June 05 04:18 BST (UK) »
Due to the importance of the mariners, I have expanded the title of this thread to all that work on vessels from canal pleasure boats to the
Royal Navy.

This thread could even cover the fishing trade from the Puncknow fishermen of the 1870's and 1880's such as John SYMES & James TREVITT to
the Barking fishers such as one William GODBOLD.

It could cover Marine tragedy such as the loss of James Richard ZELLEY
and the cutter "Spirit" in 1910 or the merchant seamen of WW II..
For modern day, one may remember Captain John SALT and the crew
of the "HMS Sheffield" in 1982. :'(
