Trier is in Rhineland-Pfalz but not Prussia as far as I know. There are different versions of the place (depending on the country) but in French it's Trèves (probably the Treves of Clementine Marx's birthplace). Cologne is about 120 or so miles away but it's still possible they were related to each other.

Rheinland-Pfalz did not exist in 1818, it was founded after WWII.  wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trier) writes the following about Trier

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Trier was sought after by France, who invaded during the Thirty Years' War, the War of the Grand Alliance, the War of the Spanish Succession, and the War of the Polish Succession. France succeeded in finally claiming Trier in 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars, and the electoral archbishopric was dissolved. After the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815, Trier passed to the Kingdom of Prussia. Karl Marx was born in the city in 1818

Thanks, this highlights my ignorance of Germany.
Wiki tells all!
On 30 April 1815, Prussian authorities reorganised the states of the kingdom into 10 provinces with the Verordnung wegen verbesserter Einrichtung der Provinzialbehörden (English: Regulation for the establishment of improved provincial authorities), of which Jülich-Cleves-Berg was one.

The provincial government was headquartered in Cologne, with the province subdivided into Bezirker (districts) of Düsseldorf, Cleves and Cologne from 22 April 1816. The provincial president was Frederick, Count of Solms-Laubach.
On 22 June 1822, an order of the Prussian cabinet (German: Kabinettsordre) united the province with the Grand Duchy of the Lower Rhine province, with its capital in Koblenz.

English and History were the two subjects  I really hated. For my sins I now live in an English speaking country (when my former teacher found that out she nearly killed herself laughing).

History is included in family research and now really interesting and makes dates much easier to remember.

Mark, you could perhaps send a pm to JustinL and ask for help. He knows a lot about how to research Jewish families.

Hi

There are naturalisation papers and certificate for Robert at The National Archives:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C4154998

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C11855884

These should have his parents' details and hopefully his father's occupation.  I can photograph them next time I'm there (should be this week).

Greetings Gaie

That is most generous of you to dig out all those very useful details including the parents for Robert Joseph MARX.

I notice that his business name is:
J Marx & Co, 133/9 Finsbury Pavement, London EC

I wonder if Robert's father Jacob MARX came to London to join him in business.

I will see if I can find this business name in the directories.
