Louisa North b.1881 travelling to Bombay??
« on: Monday 03 February 14 16:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm trying to find out what happened to my ancestor Louisa North, born 1881 in Warrington, Lancashire. I started off with the thread below:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=673028.msg5180943#msg5180943

RootsChatters found two possible records on passenger lists, one going to Australia, which I followed up here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=673093.msg5181670#msg5181670

I am now trying to follow up the other passenger list possibility, on the Scindia, sailing from Liverpool to Bombay on the 17th March 1810. I attach the relevant part of the document here.

I would appreciate some help in deciphering the other passenger names, as this might help me find out if this Louisa North is my missing relative. Also, it looks as though she may be accompanying these other people as a children's nurse or nanny, what do you think? Would they be emigrating, or just visiting? Could one of the passengers have been an Indian companion/servant?
Any help in confirming or eliminating this Louisa will be very gratefully received.
Thanks
Mand

I believe it is:

Mrs G D French
 + infant
+ "Mrs French Ayah" - not a name but  a description, this is the servant (probably an Indian woman) of Mrs French
Mrs C C Kitchen
 + child
Louisa North (nurse) - probably working for Mrs Kitchen, judging by the layout.
Major Tucker
Mrs Tucker
 an infant

There is no indication of how long they are staying.  The women were probably heading out to join (or quite likely re-join, in the case of Mrs French) husbands who were working in India (military or civilians, hard to know).

You might check to see if you can find the Kitchen family (possibly just as "Mrs" + "child") returning into the UK, perhaps with a Miss North, servant, with them.

Thanks jorose.
Would the initials of these married ladies be those of their husband?
Where might I look for returning passenger lists? They're not on FindMyPast.
Cheers

I think they may be the husband's initials - there is a male G D French heading to India in 1919 b. circa 1874.
The returning passenger records may only be available through Ancestry - I don't have access personally.

At http://search.fibis.org the Times of India has some records for Mr and Mrs  G D French 1907 - George Douglas French ICS m. Evelyn Glennie in Poona. -  1908 - son b. Westfields East Grinstead (G D French ICS) - presumably the boy on the passenger list -  and son b. 1918, in Poona.

The Kitchen family, if I read that name correctly, seem less easy to track.  Maybe the initials aren't "C C"?  ???

Putting CC Kitchen into search on FindMyPast brings up the same passenger list, so they've obviously read and transcribed the name as this. No other records though, so no nearer finding out what happened to Louisa. I don't have access to A******y either - please is there anyone reading this who could have a quick look for me?
Thanks
