John Andrew or Andrews
« on: Wednesday 05 February 14 12:55 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find any information about my 2x G Grand father.  John Andrew or Andrews.  He married Janet Hyslop or Hislop.   His Daughter Agnew born in circa 1839 in Port Patrick.  On her marriage cert in 1860 she states he is/was a soldier.  Cannot find anything about him birth, marriage or death.  Unable to trace any census either.   Any help anyone can give would be great

Hi bannatyne,

Did you mean your g-grandmother was called Agnes?
If so there is an Agnes Andrew on the 1841 Census at Port Patrick age 2

Morecroft Port Patrick

Shusan Wither         age 35   Farmers wife
Helean Wither           age 11  Daughter
Margret Wither         age 2    Daughter
Janet Hayslop           age 25   Lodger
Agnes Andrew          age 2    Daughter of J Hayslop
John Cleary              age 10   Son of J Hayslop
Helen Swetn             age 3    Daughter of J Hayslop
All born Wigtownshire.

These spellings and descriptions are as transcribed on www.freecen.org.uk.

Could this be the child you mention in your post with mother and siblings?
Looby :)

That looks like the right entry Looby  :)

Janet looks to be sister of Susan and both Janet and Agnes show as living with them still at Holm Street, Port Patrick in 1851 (entry shows also on freecen). No detail for Janet's marital status on this 1851 entry although sister Susan shows as widowed. Everyone born in Portpatrick.

Susan Hislop 40 widow, seamstress
Helen Hislop 14
Margaret Hislop 10
David Hislop 7
William Hislop 4
Janet Hislop 26 sister, seamstress
Agnes Andrew 10 niece

Address: Holm Street

This looks a possible entry for Agnes' birth and christening entry https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY71-799 Maybe the original image from the old parish register might include more details that could help (although these are often minimal in terms of info).

Agnes' mother's age seems a little variable  ::) I thought this might fit for her entry https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY9Q-SXL

The son of Jannet Hislop - John Cleary.
Could this be him in 1851 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VYBQ-91J.
This young man John McClary is lodging at 230 Holm Street Blythswood Glasgow aged 20 born Port Patrick, Wigtownshire and working as a Draper's Porter. The family he is lodging with are a Port Patrick family called McCulloch.

There is a John Andrew based at Partick Barracks on the 1841 Census  :-\.
He is 25 years old born in England and a Private in the 17th Lancers.
Wonder how he would have met a Wigtownshire lass??
Not to say he is the man that's being looked for here but he's worth investigating.
Looby :)

Correction - the Census address reads Glasgow Cavalry Barracks, Govan.

Fingers crossed that the OPR entry for Agnes's birth/christening could include a ref to a regiment for John.

Odd co-incidence that the John Cleary you found Looby and Agnes Andrew both show as living at 'Holm Street' in 1851, except one was in Portpatrick and the other in Glasgow!

Thanks I managed to get Agnes birth in Oct 1839 in Portpatrick and her mother Janet Hyslop/Hislop in Jun 1824 ( not sure if that is right)  Had previously found her in the 1851 Census still living in Holm street and still with Susan's family.   I would like something that would give me a lead to pin down John.   He could be the private in the census you spoke about but that would need more digging  The John Cleary mentioned above that would make Agnes and him half siblings (can't be right got the same mother)
