Help - decipher hand writing - Chelsea Pensior Record
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 07:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Apologies now if this is posted in the wrong section but I figured Essex would be the best. My Ancestor John Baldwin enlisted in the 40th Regiment Cholester in 1825. I have a copy of this Chelsea Pension records and I'm trying to decipher what the below attachment says. I think it is says

"it appears that his general character and conduct has been very good and that he is in possession of two (2) good conduct medals"

Are the two words above that I've underlined correct
Baker, King, Rice - Boxford, Suffolk, Baldwin - Bures St Mary, Suffolk
Richer - Thorpe-Le-Soken & Colchester, Essex
Pritty - Wivenhone Essex, St Martin Colchester, Essex
Scutcher/Cutchey - Great Bentley & Great Clacton, Essex

I think the last word could be Marks.

I believe possession is correct, but I also read the second word as marks!

The first underlined word is definitely 'possession' and I agree with Kay and Wiggy that the second underlined word is 'marks'.

It probably led to badges but I still think it says marks.
I am realising now that I'm researching my own family tree, how essential good handwriting it in years ahead ... Must remember to tell my class that tomorrow ;-)
