How do I install 1881 census on my hard disk?
« on: Sunday 09 February 14 19:00 GMT (UK) »
I have the LDS 1881 census records on my PC, but have to continually swap CDs when using it. I know it is possible to run the program directly from the hard drive, but need up-to-date instructions on how to accomplish this. I am running Windows 7 professional.
I believe Family History magazine published an article on this some time ago. Anyone know which issue?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

If your records are on CD as per your query.

1. Insert and load up the CD, when it has opened, select the folder, then highlight the particular file.

2. Right Click the selected file and in the menu that appears select copy

3. Right click again on the desktop or in any folder of your choice and select paste

You will now have a copy of the file which you can access quite quickly.

Do not forget to remove the CD from the drive, when you have finished copying/pasting; you won't need it until the next time

Does this help?

The LDS discs are not comatible with Windows 7 or 8 and after talking to the LDS a year or so ago they dont intend to update the reader software as they say the information is now available on their website

The 1881 census is free on many websites!
So I'm puzzled as to why you need it on your PC? ;D

Thanks for the input.
Confusion. I tried your suggestion, but couldn't get it to work. However, I did manage to obtain the full instructions for HD installation and it's now up and running. If you (or anyone else) would like a copy, please PM me. Just a word of caution. It requires making changes to the registry, so if your not comfortable with this, find someone to do it for you.

The program runs OK on Windows 7. Just tick the compatibility box. :)

Well, for one thing, it means I don't have to be online to use it. I don't know what the speed is like online, but on my PC (SS drives) it's blistering.

Thanks again to one and all.

Then you must be using a 32 bit machine.  Wont work on my 64 bit machine and I do know all about compatability.  I dont need the BVRI or census disks now I can view the originals on Ancestry

Instructions are available at
 http://www.rootschat.com/links/0y80/

One advantage is the CD set allows access to the Scottish 1881 census.
Computers using Windows 7 Professional should use Windows Virtual PC to run Folio Views.
