"in Bethran"?
« on: Sunday 16 February 14 05:51 GMT (UK) »
I've found the transcript of a marriage entry for an ancestor at St Martin Coney Street, York in 1744/45.  It reads:
Mark Robinson of this Parish and Anne Rose in Bethran, the 25 of February. Pub.

Anyone know what the "in Bethran" refers to?  Google is not solving this one ;)  Is it a typo for something else?  It comes up a few times in the York registers.

Thanks!

I do wonder if it's a typo for something else, although for what I cannot imagine.

I tried looking at a list of latin words commonly used in PR but I didn't find any likely candidates.

Is there any chance you can find a different transcript for the same source, or even the original source?
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

It may be The Bedern.  I notice that most of the references to "the Bethran/Bethron" occur in the registers of St Michael le Belfrey, which also contain "the Bedern", or just "Bedern" occurring in the same way.

Thanks!  A quick Google has found the Bedern Hall which looks like a likely candidate for the right area:

Are there any original York records available online?  I've only managed to find transcripts so far.

Mark Robinson of this Parish and Anne Rose in Bethran, the 25 of February. Pub.

You need to replace "in" to "from" (or "of") - ie Anne Rose from Bethran

Where "Bethran" is or was is open to interpretation, so you are wise to try to look at the original register yourself.

I don't think that PRs for York churches are available anywhere online at present.  The originals are held at the Borthwick Institute:

http://www.york.ac.uk/library/borthwick/

who can supply copies:

http://www.york.ac.uk/library/borthwick/copying/remote-copy-services/

I think the cost per photocopy is £1, but the minimum order is £7.50 + postage

It might be worth emailing them with your question, as they are in York and probably can help.
