There were other censuses before 1841, but they only show the numbers of males and females per dwelling - therefore of little us to us family historians!

The 1841 census was the first to be useful.
But, as I said, ages were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years (so John's age was between 55 and 59!) and there is no relationship to the Head of household.

Before 1837, when Civil Registration started (Birth, Marriage and Death certificates) you are going to have to rely on Parish Registers, and other local documents!
That's the fun of Family History! Digging around yourself and finding answers! ;D

Good hunting! ;D

Try FamilySearch, or a visit to Kendal Record Office?

Now think John Harrison born abt 1786 from 1841 census as he was 55 yrs.  Was Far Cross Bank in city or country?  Need something to go on really.
Is there a census 1841 for James Lee who married Ann Cragg in 1818?
It is a long way for me to come to Kendal County Office.  I might get there in a year or so. Thanks.

Sorry? I don't understand this sentence? I have already told you (twice) that ages were rounded down on the 1841census?

GenUKI says:  The village of FAR-CROSS-BANK in the township of Scalthwaite-Rigg, forms a suburb of Kendal.
And this from a history of The Duke of Cumberland public house: The Duke of Cumberland is the first and last pub on the North Eastern entrance\exit to and from Kendal. It sits at the junction of Shap Road and Appleby Road. This area used to be called Far Cross Bank. Shap Road was Far Cross Bank West, and Appleby Road was Far Cross Bank East. At the junction of these roads, a medieval cross once stood.
Isn't it amazing what Google turns up?

I'm not seeing such a couple in Kendal, in 1841?

Unfortunately, your profile doesn't mention where in the world you are based? So I have no idea how far from Kendal you are? ;D

I live in Western Australia.  I think you last reply unhelpful and abrupt. First time I mentioned 1796, 2nd time abt 1786. Harrisons were also related to Bensons but I will cease contact.
Annie Lee nee Harrison married wealth in Victoria Australia.  Her husband returned to England 6 times to visit Grasmere and also Cornwall to take back miners for his Iron Foundry in Bendigo.
My family had asked me being the oldest family member to find out more. Maybe it is too difficult on this Roots Chat.  I need a line where people help each other.

I hardly think 5 replies, census returns, and other information was being abrupt & unhelpful? ???

Can we start with the dates that your family emigrated to Australia? And work backwards from that?

You really do need to be more precise ;D
For example, there are 64 John Harrison's in Westmorland on the 1851 census!
Another 137 in neighbouring Cumberland, and 760 in Lancashire!!

And I apologise if I don't understand the way you write your sentences! ;D

This might be the James mentioned in 1841

James Harrison
christening: 3 June 1821 Kendal, Westmoreland, England
residence:  Kendal, Westmoreland, England

father: John Harrison
mother: Agnes Harrison

This christening took place 2 weeks before the death of Agnes that you mentioned earlier. Did she die shortly after giving birth?

Then there is this one ???
John Dodd Harrison
birth: 1838
christening: 1838 KENDAL, WESTMORELAND, ENGLAND
residence: 1838 Kendal, Westmorland, England

father: John Harrison
mother: Agnes
