Hi Ruskie. Many thanks for your interest.
I had posted this in the hope that fresh eyes would know something new before I finally decided to give up on a burial for him.
Cause of death is listed in the records as surgical kidney perineul (or words to that effect), which would perhaps have made his body of interest as they had presumably operated on him. I think he probably did go for medical research.
I will now close this post

If any workhouse records survive they will probably say where he was buried ( if local cemetery that workhouse generally used) or if body was taken elsewhere by someone.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Barbara

I had a look at the records and his entries and the previous posts.

If he was of 'St Pauls Deptford' then he is most probably buried in a common grave at Ladywell & Brockley cemetery which is the nearest municpal cemetery to his home.

You need to contact Bereavement Services here

http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/birthsdeathsmarriagesCP/deaths/Pages/cemeteries-and-crematoriums.aspx

but they do charge for look-ups

Rootchatters are amazing, so willing to put in time and effort for others. I hope I can do the same in the future.
Many thanks for the suggestion Lizb but the workhouse records on Ancestry have no information contained in the boxes for burial.
Thanks for the link Dawn, will keep that in mind. If Ellen Carroll wasn't responsible and the family didn't want to know, would the workhouse want the expense? I cant see it somehow.

That's what the 'parish' was there for pre-nhs and welfare state days. Baptism was quite important back then, as it was a sign of belonging somewhere. The workhouses were run by the parishes and the Board of Guardians, set up to raise funds and look after the needy with them.

If there were no funds and no family, he would have had a no-frills funeral and burial in a common plot with lots of others, no headstone as a consequence.

If you ever get the chance to visit the London Metropolitan Archives, have a look at the workhouse records deposited there. Only a small number have been digitised and put online.
