Keep in mind that the Ellis Island site only has passenger lists going to New York.  If they went to Philadelphia, they may have sailed to Philadelphia.  There are Philadelphia passenger lists available for searching here - https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1921481

The South Dakota death index has a Daniel J. Obrine (note the misspelling on the surname) listed as having died 31 Dec. 1905 in Lawrence Co.  Maybe that's him?
