Poring over old maps (especially the super scale one here:

http://maps.nls.uk/os/london-1890s/index.html

finally located 4, Retreat Cottage, Clapton the residence of the bride and groom.

Turns out it's only around 1000 metres from 150, Olinda Rd, Stamford Hill, the residence of the main family.

Starting to look good for "Joseph Edwards Bice" being my "Joseph Edwin Bice"

I've been trying to check out the witnesses to that 1906 marriage incase there is any link to to Bice family,no luck yet.

I see from the 1891 census that dad is just named as Thomas Bice- not John Thomas Bice,so he calls himself both.

As the marriage entry is the very last one in that book, maybe the vicar wrote the surname BICE in beforehand so that no one else would pinch his space?

One of them doesn't look at all helpful; "Alice May Dacomber" appears to have more or less the same name as "Arthur Dacomber" who performed the service. I'm not sure of the surname, but
I'm sure it's the same for both people.

So we only have one "real" witness, Sarah Annie Lambert. I think she's born 1891 (FreeBMD) in Hackney, and shows on the 1901 as born Clapton, living Stamford Hill, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Class: RG13; Piece: 212; Folio: 159; Page: 70.). Right area, but she's slightly young - only 15?

Yes, good point.

He "stabilised" onto John Thomas later in life.

Sarah Ann Lambert married William Darling in 1910- her signature is almost exactly the same as on the 1906 marriage cert and their address was 5 Retreat Cottages(next door to the Bice's in 1906)
Sadly the Bice's were not their witnesses !

Oh, nice find! Looks like she fibbed a bit on being 21... Born 1891, married 1910...

And her father's stopped being a labourer, and become a lighterman, which is a nice little job when you live near the river Lea.

Noticed hubby was a gunner- wonder if Joseph joined up and that's why we can't find him, maybe he's the one who died in WW1 in 1916?

Just found a WW11 draft record card in USA of an...

Edward Joseph Rice
Birth Date    23 Aug 1889
but he says he's born in Pennsylvania

Married to a Beatrice M Bice on the 1910 census b 1894.

He seems to alternate between Bice and Rice on each census.

False alarm- she's born in England but he's born in USA with a german father.

Have you looked at the 1917 Islington marriage of a Beatrice M Bice to a Samuel Lancaster?
