1787 Occupation 'day tale man' ?
« on: Friday 28 February 14 18:36 GMT (UK) »
I am transcribing baptisms from Alnwick Sion Meeting House (formerly Bondgate) Presbyterian Register for FreeREG and a birth in 1787 has the father's occupation as what appears to say 'day tale man'

Not vital for the transcription I just need to type what I see, but I've not seen this before and wondered if anyone can shed any light on it?

Only thing I can think of is that the 'tale' should read as 'tally' (spelling not a strong point in this register) and he was paid by the day for his labour, but that is just straw clutching :-)

If it helps there is an image of it here:

Thanks

I'm inclined to agree with your straw clutching....tally could phonetically be written tale; at first I thought the surname could be Bellday but it's unlikely. Perhaps you'll come across other baptisms of children of this father.

Any worker paid by the day was called a dataller/dataler/datailer/dateler/

Thank you Stan and Josey

Other entries about this time mention 'day labourer' ( all in the same writing) I suppose it depended on what the father 'said' his occupation was and the minister/clerk just wrote down whatever they said (as well as they could spell it)

Another mystery solved with help from Roots Chatters.

Thank you!
