Man with a cross-stich shirt.
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 00:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I have this photo of a man with what appears to be cross-stitching on his shirt. Any ideas on the shirt or date of photo please?

Cross stitch is not the sort of embroidery you'd see on a man's cotton shirt, so I think he's wearing a plain knitted jumper (sweater), possibly in old fashioned 3 ply or 4 ply wool which has then had the addition of what looks like part of an embroidered name/initials.  The embroidery I use on a knitted jumper is called "swiss embroidery" (or swiss darning).  The embroidery stitches go in and out of the knitting following the knitted "V" shapes, which is possibly why you thought it might be cross stitch.

How intriguing! Do you know who this man is? Is he family?
From the couple of letters visible, unless he belongs to an organization of some sort, it will be very hard to work out what the words might be, so I am wondering if identifying him might help?  :-\

No I don't know who the man is. Hence why I am interested in knowing a bit more about the clothes he is wearing. I haven't seen anything similar.

The Adelaide Photo Co. were operating from 101a Rundle Street between 1895 & 1900 if that helps and as for the "shirt" I would term this more as a pullover which was worn by sailors. I have seen images of crew members of private yachts, skiffs etc wearing such a garment with the name of the vessel sewn onto them in this manner.

I was thinking along the same lines as OR; as soon as I saw the photo I thought of the guernsey sweaters which fishermen/mariners used to wear and indeed, still do.   Wonder if he has the name of his boat embroidered on his sweater.

Guerney Sweaters....thats the name that I was looking for but just could not remember when typing  ;D I have been searching on the 'net for an image from the period which would show Katharine75 the type of thing that I mean but the nearest that I can get to it is some images of Sir Thomas Lipton's crew aboard his vessel Shamrock IV & V.
