Elizabeth Martha Terrey - the woman who marries without being born?
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 15:38 GMT (UK) »
I have a London marriage for a widowed Elizabeth Martha Williams to William George Bond.  Their banns are read on 1, 8 & 15 April 1866 and they marry at St. Mary, Lambeth on 8 July 1866.  On both the banns and the marriage certificate Elizabeth is recorded as being a widow.  On the marriage certificate she gives her father as John Terrey, Deceased, Carpenter. I have found Elizabeth and William Bond in the 1871, 1881 & 1891 censuses.

From these I know she is born about 1843 in Westminster St. Margaret.  I have searched for a birth of an Elizabeth Martha Terrey in the appropriate years and locations but have found nothing.  I have searched the 1851 and 1861 censuses for an Elizabeth Martha Terrey but have also found nothing.

I have searced for marriages betweeen Elizabeth Martha Terrey and a Mr. Williams between 1855 and 1866 but again have found nothing. In short, the first record I can find of Elizabeth is her marriage to William Bond in 1866 - she doesn't seem to exist before this!

No-one has her in any online tree.

Can anybody please provide details of her origin?

Regards, Pheno

Thank you for your help so far.

I double-checked the 71, 81 and 91 censuses and Elizabeth consistently says she was born in Westminster. In two of the three, she is recorded as Elizabeth M Bond...so I'm confident her middle name is Martha as recorded in the banns and marriage certificate.

So I think the Elizabeth Terry you found is someone else I'm afraid.

I can't even find Elizabeth's first marriage to ? Williams.

Thank you,
Pheno

Could this be relevant.....

In 1867 George Terrey with father John Terrey (deceased) fishmonger also marries at St Mary Lambeth.

There's a baptism of George Terrey in 1837 with parents John & Rhoda Maria, also a baptism of Elizabeth Terrey in 1840 with parents John & Rhoda Maria of Wells Street but John is shown as deceased, no occupation. Both baptisms at St Giles Camberwell.

There also baptisms of Robert Terrey in 1829 and William in 1832 at Camberwell.

If this does turn out to be relevant, Elizabeth wouldn't be the first woman to alter her place of birth and knock a few years off her age, and if this John Terrey was her father and deceased before her baptism, she may not have known exactly what his occupation was.

In the 1851 census, Rhoda, George & Elizabeth "Tarsey" are still in Wells Street in Camberwell

The Elizabeth Terrey who married John Fraser could sign her name, neat writing. The Elizabeth Williams who married William Bond could only leave her mark. So not the same woman.

A tree on ancestry has a child born to Elizabeth & John Fraser giving place of birth as Wells St Camberwell. The deaths occur in New Zealand.
 Elizabeths death 3 Aug 1924.
That accounts for the Camberwell census
