France: Emile Beugnies + translations required
« on: Friday 07 March 14 07:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, i was wondering whether someone could help, I am trying to find out where Emile Beugnies fits into the family tree. i have been lent some of my great grandfathers letters and within them there is letters from Emile Beugnies and he always writes dear cousin. He came over to australia to visit in 1932, so thats the only indicator i have of any age.

Other surnames in the family are Matton, Smagge, Roseau, Devos, Marquis, Decoo, Ryngaert, Beart, Debeusscher & Dehorter.

Also if someone would be able to translate the letter and postcard i have attached, that would be very helpful, it might also give some more clues about him.

Thanks :)

Do you know who Albert and Louis mentioned in the letter are?  (Possibly children of Emile - if so sounds like they were grown up and married with kids).

My French isn't up to a full translation but at the end he also says thank you for a letter which he received in Anvers, Belgium?  (perhaps he sailed from Antwerp).  Certainly the surname appears a lot in Nord so it's likely the Beugnies family could have been from either side of the French/Belgium border.

Did the person who received the letter grow up in France/Belgium?  If so I'd start looking in that same area for a close cousin who might have been of a similar age.

Albert is my great grandfather, Louis is his brother. Their father Louis (wh died in 1906) grew up in france.

I think Emile did some traverling before he came over to australia, as there is a letter from him in poor english, which states he stayed in a few places for a few months before he plans to come out in September, the letter was written in July.

I'm pretty sure Emile Resided in Dunkirk as he mentions in the letter he went home during his travels for a few days to catch up with family.

So here is a quick run down on the family without going back to far.

I'm not good at reading French handwriting, but here is the gist of what is on the postcard dated 27 July 1931: Emile apologises for writing in French, as he does not know enough English to write. He hopes his cousins are well. He intends to leave Dunkirk on 16 July for Australia, and signs off as "your cousin who won't forget you".

Had a look for the Decoos.

First, military records:
Albert Eugene Decoo b. 08/11/1872 Petit-Synthe
Dunkerque Bureau, vol 6 2560 1892
Shows he and his parents resided in Saint-Pol-sur-Mer (now part of Dunkerque)

He married in Dunkerque, 6 Jan 1900, to Augustine Adele Borel.
Witnesses include his brother in law,  Jean Louis Marquis

Victor Benjamin Decoo b. 19/02/1875 Petit-Synthe
Dunkerque Bureau vol 5 2002 1895
Shows much the same details.

Found also some "Beugniez" military entries and the following two "Beugnies" - index only the full records are not online but could this be Emile?
1929 Charles Louis Beugnies, 29 593 00547  (b. circa 1909)
1925 Emile Noel Corneille Beugnies, 25 593 1090 (b. circa 1905)
