Hi All

The Issac really seems to fit but the marriage cert I have for my ggrandfather`s (2nd wedding to a Harriet Ashmore) in 1911 in chapel en le frith says his father is Richard Wain.
I don`t know if this is a photo copy of the original for written by the registrar that I ordered it from. There are a number of styles of writing!
my g grandfather says his father is a labourer but deceased (or at least it looks like deceased).

There's a death of an Isaac Wain in Q2 1865 in Chapel-en-le-Frith Reg District.

Perhaps Isaac died, Richard assumed responsibility for the family and one thing lead to another.  Just a thought ...

I really wouldn't go too much by what is said about parents on the marriage certificate. People often made up names of fathers in order to look respectable.

If that 1871 census is correct and Phoebe was a widow by then, any children after that wouldn't have been by the same father as Ann and Frederick. If they were illegitimate they would have been called Wain though, as that was their mother's name. Perhaps Ernest was told his father's name was Richard and assumed it was Wain, or perhaps, as I said, he made it up. Have you got his birth certificate to see what it says on there?

I wonder is there any way to prove that Issac Wain in connected to Richard Wain who is the stepson of Abram Naden in the 1861 census in Hartington, which I am assuming is near to where Pheaby was hanging out.

I wonder if anyone could look up was the wife of Abram Naden who had Richard Wain living with him as a stepson in the 1861 census. Perhaps if we know who his mother is and who she was married to before Abram Naden I could connect Richard and Issac?
