1871 & 1881 Census - Bardock COLE - Little Oakley
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 19:07 BST (UK) »
Hello

I know the 1881 census is on line but try as I might I cannot find Bardock (Bardick) COLE born about 1834 in Wix.  His 1861 census entry is

1861  Census little oakley Ref RG9/1095/159/7
bardock cole 27 stone dredger b wix

He was married to Hannah, who may be the one on the 1881 as married with children but no sign of husband.

FreeBMD has him dying in 1883 at the age of 52.

If anyone can find him on the 1881 I'd be delighted.  Any sign of the family on 1871 would be a bonus.  His father also called Bardock is on the 1881 - age 70.

Many thanks

I was hoping to find them in 1881 with his additional info, but Hannah is alone (though down as married) with the children in Ramsay in 1881, RG11/1784 Folio 50 p. 18  :'(

Hello Tati

Frustrating isn't it?  Especially when we should be able to find him as we think we know the date of death.  Perhaps Mrs Cole just forgot to tell the enumerator about him or thought that someone else would report him.  Do you think he might be in thelocal workhouse or prison?

I've tried various first names - Patrick, Braddick etc but to no effect.

I've got a great grandfather who doesn't seem to have been found on census day in 1881 as well!  Most annoying of him.

Thanks for all the info.

Hi Verona,

curiousity got the better of me, I searched the 1881 on just Bardick born Essex and came up with this gentleman as a crew member on a dredger in Harwich.  Bardick RAISON, about the right age. Hannah and family are in Ramsey, and this is the place given as birthplace.  We do not know if he was under a false name, or it is a mistake - but certainly something for you to think about in view of the fact that he never slept at home the night of the census - and this could be the reason.

Anyhow, someone might be able to indicate if this person actually exists anytime earlier at the same time you can find your Bardock.

Hello

You crafty thing!  Bardick Raisin sounds like something to add to a cake mixture!

I wondered if he had got left at the bottom of the previous page - his wife being described as "wife" rather than "head" made me think of it - when the originals were transcribed.

Thank you - we shall ponder!
