***COMPLETED with THANKS***A merry DANCE..
« on: Tuesday 11 March 14 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Trying to help out a friend here...
1901 census
Joseph DAnce widow 51 born Newburn coal miner
William Dance son 17 born Newburn coal miner
Ellen Porter daughter 21 her husband is also showing.

1981 census
Joseph and his wife Sarah along with 2 year old Ellen and her two sisters.

1991 Census can not find Ellen or William or a satisfactory Joseph. Tried wildcards etc. Pretty sure Sarah dies 1866 in childbirth. Joseph would be left with four young children.

Thanks
Jen

On the 1881 census there appears to be three Joseph Dances, all born Newburn all miners - all born within five years of each other. The only one with an child called Ellen is married to Sarah  is one married to a Margaret with a daughter Mary Jane and one married to Jane Athey (sp on FindMyPast).  The Ellen with Joseph showing on the 1901 is the correct age for the one born to Sarah. Going to see if I can find the same three on the 71 census...

Hi Chris,
Thanks I can see those four...going in circles here. I can only find two Joseph Dances on 71 census both living at High Street Newburn. The one age 20 is the son of Mary and Joseph Dance the other age 22 is the son of George and Margaret Dance. Neither is the correct one . No sign of the 3rd one who should be around 18 to 21...I've been through all Josephs born in Northumberland 1848 to 1854 but nothing that looks like it could be mistranscribed as Dance. I've never had an on then off then on the census before - very frustrating....

Do you know Sarah's maiden name?  Maybe the children are with their maternal garandmother in 1891.

Hello,

Take a look at 1891 4243/11/16

Joseph Chambers 38 yrs
Mary Ann 17 yrs
Ellen 15 yrs
William 7 yrs
Jane 11 yrs

All born Newburn

Now you have another mystery  ;)

Heywood

Added:
Joseph can be found with parents George and Jane Chambers

There is a marriage of George Chambers to Jane Dance in 1854 so presumably Joseph was born and registered as Dance.

Thank you Heywood!!!! Same address in 1901 but now they're Dances...I can put my huge Joseph Dance(s) matrix to one side and work on the Chambers angle.
