Caroline Scholey / James Quiet
« on: Monday 17 March 14 13:05 GMT (UK) »
G'day

Trying to find out more about a Caroline Scholey who was transported to Tasmania in 1849. She was at the Cascades Female Factor. According to Tasmanian records she married a James Quiet in 1854. Then it comes to a grinding halt. Nothing. Any ideas?

Yep i have a idea  ;D

All the transcribed stuff online has Jame's last name as Quiet. I have my doubts as when looking at a copy of the originals it doesnt look like a T at the end of his surname  ???
Im attaching 2 small pieces that i looked at.

Maybe .uiess  (f   being   ss) The .uief looks the same from the two different sources.  Is the first letter a Q?. Don't know..anyone seeing it as anything other than Q?

There is a James TWISS around at the time, but I cannot see the first letter being T.

It looks nothing like a Q to me.

I dont think his name is Quiet which is probably why the poster cant find them after the marriage.

I found his name again in Caroline's record. He was noted as been drunk and fined on the 24 Oct 1854. Might see if i can find the newspaper article  ;D

I can understand why some (possibly younger  ;D) people  may not see the first letter as Q
However, I feel certain that it is Q
The form, which is clearer on the second snip, is one which was used at one time during my time at school and it resembles a large numeral 2
