You are obviously certain John emigrated to Australia.  Some information about who he married and where and when he died may help us to help you.

Hi  Unfortunately I do not have any more information.  It is certain that he did not leave Scotland untill 1868 onwards for Australia. Sorry cannot be more helpful.

Do you have his Australian death certificate? This may contain information such as parents, how long in the State etc.

You seem very sure that he left Scotland after 1868 - how do you know this, and do you have him in any Scottish census?

It is known that he fathered an illegitimate child Nov.1868 (name is on birth certificate)  Checked 1861 Census in the village Wandell and Lamington (where the child was born)not recorded there. Very difficult to seek elsewhere as have absolutely no other information on him.  Do not know anything about his time in Australia.  As I said before it really is a shot in the dark.  i was hoping there would be someone in Australia who might recognise the name as being an ancestor.

If you know nothing about him after 1868, how do you know he went to Australia?
Sorry to be asking such basic questions ....
(John Forrest is not such an unusual name though - and unless you know whereabouts in Australia he went, it will be difficult to narrow him down unless he travelled with other family as sometimes people can be identified in immigration records in family groups) :-\

139 John Forrest's born lanarkshire that are listed on the 1861 census including 1 that was listed as abroad on a ship in an overseas port at the census.

You may need more to go on as in Australia there are 6 state and 2 territory BDM's and each would need to be checked, so no hope really. How would we be able to identify which one.

Just on NSW BDM there are 24 deaths listed between 1870 and 1950 of John Forrest's?

As we have no idea where he was born, when he was born, where he lived ... to give a rough idea I searched the 1861 Scottish census for John For*est* b 1843 +/- 10 years and got 56 results. Of course the birth year could be earlier or later than my 'guess' ....

Added: Sorry Neil I did not read your reply before I posted this - I see you are thinking along the same lines as me.

Three John Forrests born in Carluke in 1861 census - one in 1835, one in 1837 and another in 1839. Two are married. The one b 1839 is single, and a draper ....  :-\
Of course any seafaring John Forrests may be away and not included on census.
