Once again - big thank you.  i'd found the 1901 but not the 1891.  I'd been told there was a Hannah who stayed in England but hadn't found her.  Born in America Indian Territory sounds brilliant - the family must have travelled around a bit I think.  No wonder I couldn't find William Ackley in most of the census.

I've found Rebecca's husband, James Cairns emigration on the Oceanic in 1906.  I think father William Ackley and his son William went out on the Cymric to Boston on 24 November 1905.  I don't suppose you may know where I could find the arrival in Boston for that one do you?

LAC has started the digitization process for the military files. Different parts of the collection will be closed for the period that is being digitized and you won't be able to search and locate attestation papers. According to the site, the first quarter beginning with the letter A - D will be closed March 2014 and will be available on line in summer 2014. It is a large project but when finished the complete military files will be available on line for free. It could take several years depending on the resources allotted to the project. Information is available at LAC about the project.

You can still access some of the Attestation Papers by going to
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html

Go to Soldiers of the First World War, click search and enter the name you are looking for. If the file isn't one that is being worked on, you should be able to view the attestation papers.

Hi Sandra

Thanks for all this and sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've only just seen it.

I'll have a look at the attestation papers - I never thought to look at Canada!
