Author Topic: Can't start any program from my Desktop (Read 857 times)

I have been away for a couple of days and computer was working fine, since I came home today I haven't been able to start any programme from my DESKTOP.
I have Norton 360 and Internet Explorer If go to IE I can open the URL's any ideas?
The computer was unplugged and Broadband disconnected while I was away

I'm not a computer expert, but as you unplugged your computer and more importantly disconnected Broadband, my guess is that you'll have to set the whole thing up again. I've never heard of anyone disconnecting their broadband before going away.

Unplugging the broadband, and indeed unplugging the computer should not cause a problem. The broadband/internet settings are stored on the router so when it's plugged back in should just take a few minutes to reconnect.

When you say that you can't run a "programme" from the desktop I assume you are referring to shortcuts to URL's? Are you double-clicking them to open them? What happens if you click with the right mouse button and select Open? Do other shortcuts work eg Recycle Bin?

If it is only the URL's what happens if you create new ones? Do the new ones work? You may have to simply recreate the URL shortcuts you have.

Sorry for all the questions but it will help identify what the problem might be!

Also do you know what version of Windows you are running?

How did you get to Rootschat to start this thread?

I. E. and Outlook Express icons are working but none of the others, so I went to IE and typed in Rootschat url which I have done again today.
I tried a new desktop icon and it doesn't work.
I always disconnect my router when going away in case of lightning or something.
I have never had this problem before.

Should have said I always right click and then open.
Another thing is this morning when the message came through on outlook that there was a reply to my query, I clicked the url and nothing happened so once again I have gone to IE and typed in rootschat.

try going to an earlier restore point.

Looks like a problem with Internet Explorer. restoring to an earlier point should solve it or you could re-install Internet Explorer or an alternative browser.
