Have you seen the site 1820settlers.co.uk?  There is information on that regarding the family - and the sources listed are Roland Keith Robinson and William Robinson.  Possibly they would have more information.

I have visited the settlers site, thank you, and I've been in touch with William at times in the past. The problem I face is that our branch of the Robinson family is small and not very significant; not much was known until I started poking around and joined a few things up. I will go back and check that nothing has changed.
Having established that we were indeed descended from Robert Robinson, now my research efforts are mostly about the glaring omission in our tree of a death date/place for Philip Joseph and having a proper story for that period in our family's history which, thanks to the estrangement is sadly lacking. I am enormously grateful for any help anyone can give.
Thank you,
Ric

Found this on the angloboerwar site.  If you go to the site and click on the Kimberley Horse Unit you can read up about their exploits.

Robinson Philip Joseph 42341  Corporal Source: Nominal roll in WO127 Kimberley Horse

Hi again,
I found the papers regarding this and it looks like this might be the other Philip Joseph Robinson! I've passed it on to someone I know from that branch for comment. Annoyingly it seems that they not only shared a name and birth year, but they lived on the same street!!  ::)

That is ridiculous!  You really have a problem on your hands:(  Possibly the only way you might find out something is by looking into the families of Ralph and Andrew through the documents at the archives.  Maybe they would have more information.

Thank you again for your help. I have heard back from the cousin's researcher and they are happy for the information. I think if we work together we may start to unpick this puzzle.

Was Re: Robinson, now looking for CAHILL

My grandfather, Philip Benjamin ROBINSON (1912-1977), was estranged from his family. This means I know very little about them and would appreciate any information I can find about the following.
Parents;
Philip Joseph ROBINSON (b 1878)
Louisa ANDERSON (1884-1920)
Siblings;
Ralph Victor ROBINSON (b 1903)
Edith Pauline ROBINSON (b 1905)
Doris Magdalene ROBINSON (b 1907)
Constance Louisa ROBINSON (b 1910)
Andrew Joseph ROBINSON (1911 - 1973)

I know Philip Joseph ROBINSON's antecedents but have no record of his death or of his life beyond about 1930. Similarly I have virtually no information about his other children except that Constance married someone called SWEIGERS.
Any help would be most gratefully received.
Thank you for reading this.
Regards,
Ric Robinson

Well, it turns out I don't know this! Have just received information about a Philip Robinson I had hoped was this chap but it turns out it wasn't.

Anyway, I DO know that Philip Joseph Robinson's mother was Sarah CAHILL, so I need to find a marriage to a Robinson!
Help always much appreciated (6000 miles worth!)

Hope this is the right guy this time  ::)

Philip Robinson (son of Philip Robinson and Martha Elizabeth Cornelia Beytell) was born 1856 in Cradock, South Africa, and died 01 Dec 1919 in Smit Street, Middleburg, South Africa. He married (1) Sarah Cahill. He married (2) Hester Magdelena Johanne C. van Blerk on 17 Jan 1874 in Middleburg, South Africa.

Found this by googling Sarah Cahill+Harrismith.  There is quite a bit more information on the site.

Unfortunately that is what I have just undone. The same Philip Robinson did not marry both Hester van Blerk and Sarah Cahill.
Philip and Hester only had one son; Philip. This Philip I now know not to be my ancestor.

Sarah Cahill is known to be the grandmother of my great aunts. Her death notice in the newspaper states this, therefore she has to be my great great grandmother.

It's an almost total rethink  :(

If I thought I was confused before well now I really am!

I presume from your response that you are looking for a Sarah Cahill who married a Robinson, but not a Phillip?

Not sure if this is going to add to the confusion as I have lost track somewhat of what I am trying to find  ???  Under Natal marriages on family search (image 884) there is a marriage by Phillip Joseph Robinson aged 27 to a Dina Johanna Nel nee Botha aged 29.  This took place on 29 November 1939, so his year of birth would fit in.  He was a miner and born in the Transvaal.
