1851 Lookup - George William Rogers
« on: Thursday 23 June 05 05:28 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could I please have a 1851 household lookup for William George Rogers (born 1846 Enborne, Berkshire).

Expect his parents to be George Rogers (born circa 1820, Chaddleworth or Lambourn)  and wife Sophia.

They could be in Abingdon if not Enborne as that is where he lived with his uncle in 1861 (checked uncle's houseghold in 1851 already).

Thanks,
Jola

HI Jola

They are not in Enbourne in 1851 - no Rogers at all

closet I can find in Abingdon is this

Fo 107/1688 Fo 244 - Abingdon - Stert street area
ROGERS
William 32 Plumber born Chaddleworth
Elizabeth 26 Shorpkeeper born Abingdon
George aged 6 born Abingdon
Timothy aged 4 born Abingdon
Elizabeth aged 1 born Abingdon
James aged 21 born Berks Langford

the only other 'George' Rogers is a John George Rogers aged 5 born Abingdon father John Rogers

Hi Debbie,

Well thats information even if it isn't what I really wanted.  The one you found was the uncle I mentioned.  Will just have to wait till Ancestry or someone has the full census for 1851 that I can scrutinise.

Thank you very much for your help.

Jola

Hi Jola

I do have the whole of Berkshire for 1851 - do you have any other ideas where to look?

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for your kind offer.

I've completed some more research so I don't send you on a goosechase since the answer wasn't obvious.

I think I may have isolated William George Roger's father George in the 1861 census.

George is meant to be from Chaddleworth and there is a fellow of similar age from Lambourn Berkshire in the 1861-1901 censuses (he does say Chaddleworth in 1891).  He appears to be the only George Rogers born in Berkshire from 1810-1830 according to the 1861 census, and according to Genuki, Lambourn is only 6 miles away from Chaddleworth.

Also he is married to a Sophia which matches the IGI birth record for William George.

So I think this is the right family.

Problem is that the children born around 1847-1850 are born in  East Woodhay (Kingsclere) in Hampshire (Charles and John Thomas) and the child born in September 1853 is born in Inkpen (Hungerford) Berkshire.

So there is a chance they may have moved to Inkpen by 1851 which you could try but I could be out of luck again.

Thanks,
Jola.

George 32 born Chaddleworth
Sophia 33 born Beenham

I don't have the full census - just the index which gives the info above - but at least you know where they are now

Hi Debbie,

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you and lucky me you had Hampshire details! :D

Now I can also track the entire family with complete confidence they are the right ones.

Interestingly,  the father George appears to have a late-life crisis and at 80 years old I find him with a new wife 30 years his junior and another set of children under 12 which might be his  :o   Scary!
