I have now been to Bromley library and have obtained some useful notes on the history of the Newport Market Army Band School.  Would be happy to pass them on should anyone be interested.

Hi
I came across your post today,as I've been looking up this school as my father was at this school then went onto the Twickenham school
I would very much like to see the information that you got from Bromley as my dad has got it into his head that he wants us all to have the history of this school before he dies (he's feeling a little sorry for himself at the moment but he is 82 so we're let him off!)

there is somewhere an old boys club
thanks

Newport Market Army Band School, Orpington, Kent

(a School run by the Shaftesbury Homes Society - 1930s and 1940s)

He speaks highly of his time at the Newport Army Band School in Orpington, Kent and has fond memories of it. He said it was a lovely huge house surrounded by lots of land with four dormitories and lots of open grounds and fields  including a swimming pool.

Many of the cadets from this school went on to the Army Band School at Kneller Hall in Twickenham Middlesex

see http://www.britishpathe.com/video/behind-the-scenes-at-kneller-hall-the-home-of-brit/query/Middlesex

I have also done some research and found that there is a film about the school called "Citizens in the Making":-

The BFI archives can only be accessed by organizations and not individuals.

Thank you for inquiry.

The Newport Market Army Training School was founded in 1863 in Newmarket, Soho in order to train destitute boys  with musical ability who wanted to join army bands.  In 1928 the School was amalgamated with the Shaftesbury Homes and Arethusa, and its name changed to Newport Market Army Band School.  In our archives we have limited records for the school including magazines and reports for some of the years.  These include details of admissions and departures.  If you give me his name and any other facts you think relevant I am willing to search these for references.  However we ask for a contribution of £25 both to help towards the work and forward the aims of Shaftesbury Young People.  You may also be interested in a book by Marion Bailey called The Chance of a Lifetime, The Shaftesbury Homes and Arethusa - 150 Years which is on sale from us for £7 inclusive of p&p.  It has information on all the Shaftesbury homes including the Newport Market Army Band School.

Hi
If you would like to know more about the school or if you would like photos (a lot with names on the reverse) let me know. My G.Grandad, Cadet Major Percy Lloyd King was the superintendent. I may have some photos of interest, if you let me know a name I will go through some of them.
