I am interested to find out if the posters earlier in the thread have been able to get further back in their search.

I believe John Harris, born ca 1807 in Desertlyn, according to his enlistment papers, to be part of this large Harris family that includes Robert Harris (1825-1882). John Harris enlisted when he was 18 years old 1825 at Ballymena (Co Antrim)

A sister of Robert Harris is Mary Harris Higginson  and from a tree their (Robt & Mary) father may have been Robert.

But where does John fit in?

John was Presbyterian, married to Catherine and lived, at the time of the death of Catherine in 1873, in Moneyrannel.

He was discharged from the Army on health grounds in 1842.

He had three children:
John Frederick Harris or Frederick John Harris (no dates found but possibly emigrated to Kentucky US)
Linsey/Lindsey/Lindsay Harris who married at Drumachose to Mary Ann Callaghan, had a daughter Catherine in 1862, emigrated to the US in 1865 and died in Philadelphia in 1880

Catherine Harris Ramage who died in NZ in 1886, poss. born 1844.   I am descended from this family.

Any help with finding John would be greatly appreciated.
