Adolph Otto Kingdom of Saxony
« on: Monday 31 March 14 04:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am seeking any info on Adolph OTTO, b. 1 Jul 1833 in Eisfeld, Kingdom of Saxony; d. 1893 Boston, Massachusetts. According to his naturalization record, he arrived in New York in 1845. I find him living in Boston by 1860, married to Margaret Lowrie (of New Brunswick), with their first child. It appears that at some point his mother emigrated to Boston as well, as she is living with him in 1865 (per state census). Her name was Elizabeth OTTO (nee HEMLEIN). Sadly, I believe she may have died at Worcester Insane Asylum, per a record of death I recently came across.

I have no info on Adolph's father.

Thank you very much.

Hi Steve,

the Mormons have a film about emigrants from Eisfeld. You can borrow it from the nearest history center.

https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=1335546&disp=Auswanderungen+nach+Nordamerika

The following people named Otto from Eisfeld migrated to America.

Otto, Adolph, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 13 Jahre, aus Eisfeld, ausgewandert nach Amerika im Jahre 1846

Otto, Anton, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 16 Jahre, aus Eisfeld ausgewandert nach: Amerika im Jahre 1877

Otto, Caroline, geb. Eckstein, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 58 Jahre aus Eisfeld, ausgewandert nach: Amerika 1877

Otto, Eduard, Beruf: Barbiergehilfe, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 16 Jahre, aus Eisfeld, ausgewandert nach: Amerika im Jahre 1887

Otto, Elisabeth geb.

You can check here if I missed one:

Hope this helps, regards Peonie

Peonie,
Thank you!
This is a branch of my family research which I thought would stop at New York. It looks as though both Adolph and his mother left in '46.
Also, thanks for the tip about the film. I will be checking that out very soon!
Gratefully,
Steve

Hi Steve,

had another look at what else the Mormons have:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yq7/

Germany, Sachsen-Meiningen, Eisfeld
Germany, Thüringen, Eisfeld

You can look at both as they have a few different things. Under Sachsen-Meiningen you can order a film with "Bürgerzählung", it's similar to a Census. Perhaps you can find the name of Adolph's father.

Regards Peonie

Hi Peonie,
More great stuff! Thanks a million. The 1834 census looks very promising. I wonder if you could tell me if you have had any experience with ordering microfilm? It seems the only location for this microfilm is in Utah. I plan on contacting them for ordering details. I wonder if it is permissible to bring one's own microfilm to any library with a viewer?
Again, thank you so much.

Hi Steve,

you need to look up the closest Mormon History Center to your home and they will order the films for you to look at at their center: https://familysearch.org/. They order them from Utah - at least that what happened when I ordered films some years ago. I am sure you also saw that the stuff from Eisfeld is in German. Good hunting.
