From the ridiculous to the sublime-migrating FTM8 to a mac?
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 09:37 BST (UK) »
Can anyone give me any advice on this one? I have just bought a new shiny Macbook Pro running OSX Maverick. My old PC, which was XP has all my family tree info (30 trees, some with over 1000 names) on it.........using Family Tree Maker version 8! Is there anyway of transfering this? Should I buy FTM for Macs and is it compatible or am I going to have to resort to converting all the info into Gedcoms and using something else.
Is there any other software (free would be good, the coffers are now depleted somewhat!) that anyone recommends?

Barnard, Ford, Pett, Moore, Holden, Collison, Kingshott, Lytollis, Kinghorn, Walker, Lightoller, Lightowler.

Let's go Free!

Gramps runs on the Mac: https://gramps-project.org/download/

As does GenealogyJ although it's dormant atm: http://genj.sourceforge.net/

Ancestris: http://www.ancestris.org/ is a fork of Genj

I'm not sure whether OSX has a web server built in or conveniently available, if so you could do a lot worse than a local install of Webtrees: http://www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/ or even HumoGen: http://humogen.com/

I've had involvement with all of these to a greater or lesser extent over the years and they all have good gedcom compatibility and functionality.

Trust that's of help :D

Thanks  Paul...will investigate....I have a 1 huge tree and several separate smaller others...doyou know if the free ones can cope with this or can be upgraded?

If you read through the various websites I think you'll find that all of the programs have been stress-tested with enormous record sets - tens of thousands wouldn't be a problem for any of them.

It's adherence to the gedcom standard that you need to think about, especially if you use some of the less frequently used tags.

Another program that you can try online that has a massive database is Geneweb : http://opensource.geneanet.org/projects/geneweb

(and seee http://roglo.eu/roglo?lang=en)

Also there's Geneamania although it's more geared towards French users/speakers, I found it reasonably good:

http://www.geneamania.net/

Of all the foregoing I would recommend Webtrees and Gramps as they are both standards compliant and in active development.
