Society of Automobile Mechanic Drivers - badge
« on: Sunday 06 April 14 11:20 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me anything about this badge or society? A cursory Google search didn't throw anything up.

Edit: it belonged to a friend of my father-in-law, a Mrs N. Horsfield née Kershaw, who died without any close family. The back is inscribed with a name: A. Kershaw - prob. her father or brother - and the number 1284.

Thanks,

Paul

A search for "society of automobile mechanic drivers" gained a handful of hits.

Some are newspaper reports behind a paywall. Others include two in the London Gazette, and these:
http://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/16th-february-1911/34/contributions-from-drivers-and-mechanics
http://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/23rd-september-1909/18/opinions-from-others
http://archive.org/stream/AutomotorJournalSecondHalf1905/automotorjournal1905b_djvu.txt (you'll need to search within this to find the references)

As this seems to have been a trade body for workers, not quite a trades union, it might be worth investigating whether its records have been deposited somewhere in the trades union and cooperative movement archives. There's guidance here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/labour.htm

Thank you GrahamSimons! So a sort of professional body representing chauffeurs and driver-mechanics. Interesting that it doesn't seem to have attracted much attention after its (presumable) demise. I'll follow up the NA link.

Thanks,

Paul
