1841 census Reading FLOWER
« on: Friday 24 June 05 02:12 BST (UK) »
This ancestor and family emigrated to New Zealand on the
SIR CHARLES FORBES, 363 ton barque, sailed from Gravesend on 1 May
1842, arrived in Nelson 22 Aug
1842 with the following passengers
Flower, William        m     39  sawyer
Flower, Elizabeth      m     38  wife
Flower, Susannah       s     17  sempstress, servant
Flower, Rhoda          s     14  sempstress

Later information to hand suggests that their Reading address was .... and this is how I got it!! ...... "5 Holly Court,  ?Coley,  ?Ten....se,  ?Read......".
Would appreciate clearer information on this if it is possible.
I have good reason to believe that there would have been another Flower family at,or near, the same address at that time ......... a brother John and his wife Eliza and children.

Hello again,
I haven't been to the restaurant,  :( just heard about it.

went to the Berks Record office here is the info I found

Reading is avery big town....
Reading St. Giles - Ho 107/34/1-9   film 10
Royal Berks Hosp. /34/10  film 10
              Whitley                 /25/8-9 film 7

Reading St.Lawrence          /35/1-6  film 11
    .....etc.

Luckily there is a street index for Reading ( I nearly cried with relief!)
Holly Court,  Reading St.Mary.   H0107/36/1-13  film 11

folio 9.-9v.
Elizabeth Flowers, Female, Age 40, Occupation Silk weaver, Born in county,  n.
Sarah Chandler, Female, 55,   born in county - n.
Rhoda Flowers, Female, 12, born in county  - y.

no sign of your William,  I checked 2 pages either side...no sign.

But I think this is them?

That's the family for sure so thanks Newbie.
William (the father) and daughter Susanna were not present for some reason but the ages of mother Elizabeth and daughter Rhoda confirm it is them.
The following year (1842) they all 'up stumps' and migrate to NZ.
BUT............... Why oh why is it when you get fresh information like this a new situation arises??? ......... with;
'Sarah Chandler, Female, 55,   born in county - n.' ......... now the mother Elizabeth (above) had the maiden name CHANDLER ......... was she a sister? and the fact that she was'nt born in the county is a problem as my records show that Elizabeth was born in the county ......... a sister in law perhaps?
Time to put the 'searching gear' on again!!.
Thanks,

I'd say you're right again Newbie ........... so I need to search for an Elizabeth and sarah CHANDLER born elsewhere circa 1795 to 1805.
Where should I start?

had another thought have you the marriage details of Elizabeth , or the baptism/christening of Rhoda? that may be a clue.
