Desperately Seeking the Neilsons....
« on: Friday 24 June 05 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I wondered if anyone could help me with my Neilson family...

I don't really have much to go on but I thought I'd post a message anyway.

Thomas Neilson married Jane Walker on October 18th 1897 in Stokesley, Yorks.  Their 1st son also Thomas was born on December 26th 1898 in Cornsilloch, Dalserf.  Jane was from Yorks and ther other children were all born in Crook, Durham.

All census state that Thomas Neilson (senior) was born in Scotland but there is no specific town.

I assume that the family were from Dalserf as Thomas (junior) was born there and my grandfather remembers going there as a child to visit aunts and uncles.

Granddad specifically remembers an Aunt Bett and an Uncle Archie who he thinks were either Thomas' brother and sister or sister and brother in law.

At some point Thomas went to South Africa to the gold mines. He was originally a coal miner but then took over the Prince of Wales Public House in Crook, Durham.  He (according to my granddad) died aged 39.  I don't have any record of this though.

Thank you in anticipation.

Thank you Audrey,

Thank you for looking that up for me, I think that is too early to be this Thomas Neilson but he would have been about 60 when he married and my Thomas only lived to be 39!!
I suppose it could be his father perhaps.

Were there any references to an Elizabeth (Bett) or Archie at all?

Thank you again
Love

The earlier 1851 Index has a 7 yr old Archibald Neilson born Dalserf living with his parents and there are several Elizabeth's (not associated with the same family)

Unfortunately without further information these could just be a wild goose chase.

Hi Falkyrn,

Thank you for looking that up for me, would it be possible to have the details from the 1851 as some of the names may ring a bell with my Granddad.

I think this Archibald may be a bit early though as Granddad remembers walking the moors with Uncle Archie in the early 1930's.

Thank you again

Thank you again Falryrn,

Thats great!!  I assume they are the only Neilson's listed on the 1851 in Dalserf?  What do the numbers after the names mean? (I realise that the number within the words is the persons age, but what are the ones after Dalserf?)  Also are these Nelisons all from the same family or a they just a list of individuals?

I will have to find the 1861 and 1871 I think before I can link my lot to any of those.

Ta muchly
