Hi
I've tracked down the birth registration of Archibald.
The certificate shows that William and Mary were not married at that time.
TradestonArchibald Stokes (illegitimate), 25 April 1894, 69 Dale Street, Glasgow
Parents - William Stokes, brass finisher (journeyman) and Mary Laird, housekeeper, formerly domestic servant
Both parents signed the certificate.

I assume that brass finisher/nautical optician/optician was an occupation that involved the manufacture/maintenance of navigational optical instruments. See, for e.g.
